Special to The Free Press

The moment that inspired Stacy K’s latest single, “Cheap Thrills,” plays back in her mind like a movie.

At the time, she had just started to hang out with her now husband, Dain Fisher, as friends. They were out camping in a place with hardly any cell phone service. All they had was quality face-toface time, getting to know one another by showing each other songs and conversation in a sober environment.

But it was the moment that Fisher began to show Stacy a song that has since been burned into her memory.

“He played the song, and he sort of just started dancing and laughing to himself,” she said. “I was just like, ‘That’s so rad,’ that you can still be comfortable in that state of mind and be sober, and enjoy it.”

It was during this time that she felt like she understood his wavelength while she observed him in this state of freedom. “It kind of just really stuck with me.”

Fast forward to a few years later, Stacy was walking Nora, their first child together, in her stroller and suddenly the melody and lyrics hit her. Thankfully Nora had fallen asleep on their walk, she said, and was able to write the song in one sitting in her home studio. A rare occurrence, Stacy said. Almost like being struck by lighting, but of course, in a more positive sense.

A few weeks after recording the single at home, it was taken to Hideaway Studios in Minneapolis where it was recorded live with Minneapolis group The Fontanelles. In fact, the idea to record the single live, a creative choice to keep the “magic of being in the present moment,” came from longtime friend and group member of Dr. Dog, Dave Mehling. Mehling is also the music video’s videographer, director and editor.

The video resembles the ideology of the single, featuring Stacy in the cabin where the memory takes place and met through her “spiritual self.” It’s an airy and artistic take — credit to Mehling — of her single.

Stacy and Mehling have known each other for almost a decade, and in the time working together, she finds his creative process inspiring. This includes the concept for the video, which is described as “a journey of the artistic spiritual self.”

“He just thinks differently than I do and I’m always like ‘Why didn’t I think of that?’ in how he writes songs and chords, and now how he makes videos.”

“Cheap Thrills” begins with that memory: “Dance around tonight in the moonlight for all the world see, like no one’s watching,” and gently swells into “because when you dance along, I begin to feel your song, feel free” before hitting the chorus; a standstill in time emulating the scenery and thoughts of the moment — “Feel life each day, feel good every day.”

One lyric that stands out to the songwriter comes in the middle of the threeminute single, where she sings “Change is going to come, you know it’s going to come, stay with me.” Having gone through difficult, life-changing patches (such as people leaving, whether in bands or in her personal life), it was a lyric that hit home for Stacy.

“Life isn’t going to be this perfect like this moment,” she said. “But if you work hard at it, it could be really awesome.”

It’s all about choosing a good attitude, she said, referring to the chorus “Feeling alive each day.”

And she knows that, at times, life can be difficult. Sometimes it’s much easier to take on life with a negative attitude. Because, as Stacy rhetorically asked, “How do you do that?”

“Sometimes it takes more effort to let things go and having things in perspective,” she said.

Sometimes it just takes some ‘cheap thrills’ to get through the day.

STACY K ON RATHAUS SESSIONS VIDEO PODCAST:

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT "FEELS GOOD":

“Feels Good” is the upbeat, sunny message written by Stacy K, releasing on the first day of Summer: June 22, 2018.

Receiving previous press as “Best New Act To Keep An Eye On” from 89.3 The Current (Hotel Colfax, 2015), Stacy K has taken a turn from her former ‘folk-rock’ ways and stepped into an ‘art-rock-pop’ feel for her newest single.   Another turn Stacy K has stepped into is sobriety (3 yrs) and motherhood to baby girl, Norah Bee (1yr). Stacy K states these as major influences in writing “Feels Good”.

“Feels Good” was recorded at the Hideaway Studios in March (2018) with Jason McGlone (percussion, drum loops), Dave Mehling (keys, synth), Beau Jeffrey (bass guitar) and Stacy K (vox, guitar).  The single will also be on her full length due out in the Fall (2018).

“Feels Good” was produced by Jason McGlone and Stacy K, mixed by Jason McGlone, and mastered by Rob Schlette of Anthem Mastering.

Fun fact: One drum loop sample is the laugh of Stacy K’s baby girl, Norah Bee.
